The winter air was brisk, whipping at the tops of the waves and flinging the mist backwards, away from shore. The huge swells were curling and tumbling in thunderous confusion. Near San Simeon, California, we stopped to watch the spectacular display and I captured a photo of this wave closing in upon itself, what surfers call a closeout. Through the use of clear, bright blues and whites, I wanted to convey the crisp, brilliant day and the exhilarating mood of our drive up the Big Sur Coast.
