The golden time of day, fleeting moments of sun's final rays, is my favorite lighting for painting California seascapes. The warm glow cast upon the rocks, reflecting in the slick sand at waters edge, these images of transcendent beauty stay with me long after the sun has set and the beach has emptied. It is the embodiment of the meeting of two worlds: the cool depths of mysterious ocean and the solid landscape on which we dwell. The mirroring of colors and shapes turn the cliffs and sky into an abstract of melting hues, blending in the shallow waters, changing with the receding and advancing waves. Sunset paintings of the ocean have a special magic, as foam and white capped waves are tinted with pinks and orange. Shadows of blue and lavender elongate and deepen. In 'Avila Reflections', I used a palette knife to 'carve out' the rocks, giving them more texture. Using the properties of oil paints to my advantage, the liquid reflections flowed from my brush, as I worked in several layers of color. By varying the texture based on subject in the same painting, it gave the scene a more three dimensional quality. It is my desire that this painting moves others to feel the serenity of that precious golden hour, a time to reflect and look to the future, for each new dawn springs forth with Hope.
