Some moments are precious because they were shared with a special friend or loved one, and others are savored because they were experienced alone. I painted this seascape beach scene, “Amber Waves”, from one of those alone times. Mesmerized by the pounding roar of the waves as they collided with the jetting cliff face, I felt the earth’s power channel into the tiny cove and send coils of foam twisting across the pebbly beach. The unusual color of the waves is the result of a dusk sun shining through seawater heavy with microorganisms. Receding waters rolled the pebbles making delicate clinking sounds like thousands of marbles. I explored the nearby sea cave, dashing in as a wave went out, only to be caught inside with the next wave. Golden light filtered through mist and created a magical atmosphere in this “Montana de Oro” moment.
