Painted by hand directly on this large dome foyer ceiling, this trompe l'oeil artwork has an old world look to match the style of this Santa Barbara Estate. On a flat tray ceiling, these statues were painted as if high above the actual surface, hoisting the chandelier up. The trompe l'oeil or 'fool the eye' technique gives the illusion of an actual sky and architecture. The artwork was aged to have the effect of crumbling plaster and cracks. The style and colors were then also carried onto the wall in a trompe l'oeil arched window with a mountain landscape vista. Scrolled designs accentuate the unique architecture of this outdoor loggia leading to the pool of this Montecito, California estate.

We worked on large scaffolding over 2 stories up while the home was still in construction. Working in many translucent layers to achieve the look of ancient artwork worn by time, this project took many weeks to complete. The dome is framed in plaster that we faux finished to look like old crackled wood. The clients chose a beautiful chandelier to complete the effect, making for quite a dramatic entrance to their home.
